St. Bernard Says: Antichrist = Antipope
For 8 years, from A.D. 1130 to 1138, Peter Leonis reigned in Rome, sitting in the Chair of Peter, as Antipope Anacletus II; while the legitimate pontiff, Innocent II, was exiled in France. The magnificent Bernard of Clairvaux, canonized Saint, Doctor of the Church, co-founder of the Cistercian Order, co-founder of the Knights Templar, and preacher of the Second Crusade, had these choice words for Anacletus, whereby this Catholic giant equates a false claimant to the papacy with the person of Antichrist:
“That beast of the Apocalypse, to whom is given ‘a mouth speaking blasphemies, and to make war with the saints’ (Apoc. 13:5–7), is sitting on the throne of Peter.”
—Letter to Geoffrey of Loretto.“They [who claim ‘that the whole Church has been led to recognize Peter Leonis’] are lying men whom, with Antichrist their head, ‘the Truth shall destroy with the breath of His mouth’ (2 Thess. 2:8).”
—Letter to Count William of Poitou.St. Bernard’s words echo through the millennia as fiery rebukes directed to the antipopes J23 to Francis; one of whom may very well have been the actual Antichrist, especially considering the diabolical destruction they have left in their wake. By their fruits we know them.
